CANYON ROAD CONTEMPORARY GALLERY

Canyon Road Contemporary is a painting and sculpture gallery located along Santa Fe's historic Canyon Road, operating for almost three decades. The new owner of the gallery commissioned Surroundings to re-envision what the outdoor environments could become so that she could revive a lifeless outdoor exhibit landscape. Our goal was to transform it into a beautiful background that could elegantly frame and display small to large scale contemporary sculpture.

Sited around a 1900's historic bungalow house, Surroundings developed a series of outdoor rooms for displaying sculpture. A new flagstone pathway connects galleries behind Canyon Road Contemporary to the main sidewalk, inviting people to pass through the gallery's garden. Different scaled decomposed granite areas have hidden sculpture pads below that are used for the support and securing of sculpture. The landscape plantings that frame these outdoor rooms are composed of mounded, compact evergreens that abut against each other while taller ornamental grasses punctuate the spherical composition. A perimeter of Miscanthus grass with Sky Rocket Juniper beyond create a layering of spaces that will become the threshold to additional outdoor display rooms in the future.
